Virginia's Licensed Real Estate Salesperson Requirements

What are the state of Virginia's requirements to become a licensed real estate agent?
  1. Take 60 hours of "in-classroom*" Real Estate Salesperson pre-licensing education at an approved Virginia real estate school. Online education is not approved for pre-licensing education.
  2. Apply for and take and pass the national and state portions of the licensing exam. Exam scores are only valid for one year, and then they expire.
  3. If you are not licensed as a salesperson in Virginia, you must have your fingerprints taken at a PSI testing location in Virginia.Even if you live outside of Virginia, you are highly encouraged to get your fingerprints taken at a Virginia PSI testing location because it will speed up the mandatory background check process. A complete application must be on file with the board within 45 days or else you will have to get your fingerprints taken again for an additional fee.
  4. Print, complete, sign, and mail your application. Use most recent form downloaded directly from DPOR website
  5. A license cannot be issued until your application is 100% accurate and complete.

Virginia's Licensed Real Estate Broker Requirements

What are the state of Virginia's requirements to become a licensed real estate broker?
  1. Take 180 hours of "in-classroom*" Real Estate Salesperson pre-licensing education at an approved Virginia real estate school. Online education is not approved for pre-licensing education.
  2. Broker applicants must have been "actively engaged" in real estate full time (averaging 40/hours week) for 36 of the 48 months prior to applying.
  3. Apply for and take and pass the national and state portions of the licensing exam. Exam scores are only valid for one year, and then they expire.
  4. If you are not licensed as a salesperson in Virginia, you must have your fingerprints taken at a PSI testing location in Virginia.Even if you live outside of Virginia, you are highly encouraged to get your fingerprints taken at a Virginia PSI testing location because it will speed up the mandatory background check process. A complete application must be on file with the board within 45 days or else you will have to get your fingerprints taken again for an additional fee.

  7. Applicants applying for Sole Proprietor be sure to mark the application correctly and include all required documentation.
  8. Applicants applying for Principle Broker must Attach a complete FIRM application to your accurate and complete individual broker application.
