South Dakota Home Inspection New License Requirements
All home inspectors in South Dakota must apply for licensure. The following steps are required:
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Take a 40 hour approved pre-licensure course
- Pass the NHIE exam
- Complete federal and state background checks
- Turn in notarized application and pay $200 fee
Once you have completed these steps and your application has been accepted, you will receive the title of Registered Home Inspector. To achieve a full license, you must complete 100 inspections within no less than one year.

South Dakota Home Inspection Continuing Education Requirements
In South Dakota, all home inspection licenses expire biennially on November 30th. There are no continuing education requirements for home inspection licenses. To renew, a $100 renewal fee must be paid by the expiration date. A late fee is accrued for every month the renewal fee is not paid. If the fee is not paid by July, the license cannot be renewed and the licensee must redo the pre-licensure process and reapply.
